Re-Modelling of a Semi-Detached House

These clients approached DBD Architectural Consultancy after seeing a completed project we had be involved with to produce the plans for their recently purchased house.

The house is a back to back semi-detached property in Bagnall. Both properties where built sideways to the main road and this particular house had excellent views across the countryside.

The house had been extended some 20 years or so previously, but strangely the party wall for the extension was set back towards the neighbouring property by around 600mm, which had some issues when both parties purchased the individual houses, and more so when designing and building the alterations.

Originally the extension was almost a loft conversion with a bedroom over the dining room, having a dormer window facing the landscape views. Unfortunately the bedroom was remote from the rest of the house, in particular the first floor bedrooms having its own open plan staircase access from the dining room.

Our clients wanted to re-model the house so that the remote bedroom would be accessed from the main house along the first floor corridor and for the bedroom to have a balcony giving views to the open countryside. To provide access to the bedroom, it meant passing through the bathroom currently located at the end of the first floor corridor.

DBD obtaining planning approval to strip off the old roof and raise the walls of the original bedroom extension, whilst maintaining the height of the party wall, and extending the front wall of the bathroom, allowed the corridor to be extended to link the bedroom to the remainder of the house.
